I used to dream of my dad all the time. He’d appear, and my first feeling was relief… followed by confusion. Everything felt familiar, but in my heart, I knew something was off. He never quite came home — only ever “stayed at the Inn,” his boutique hotel that he poured his heart into. I’d cry after those dreams, overwhelmed with everything I wished I could have said to him.

As I painted this piece, the same dreamlike strangeness washed over me — that bittersweet closeness, that distance, that longing for answers. Where Have You Been? was always what my heart was asking him in my dreams, knowing how much he has missed since he’s been gone. Grief does this thing to my mind where I try and find comfort in the possibility that he’s still here, lingering in the places he loved. They use to say that the Inn was haunted with ghosts. As I painted this piece, it dawned on me — he might be one of them. I can’t believe that this painting evoked that feeling — I cried and felt comfort all at once. It was strange — but I liked it.
